Voters in the Kansas City, Kansas School District will have choices to make in the April general election. Six candidates — including two incumbents — are campaigning for three open seats.
The two incumbents are Evelyn Hudson and Vicki Meyer. Newcomers are Tyrone Garner, Janey M. Humphries, Richard J Kaminski and Orechia M. Towers.
So far, only Garner has responded to an invitation to complete the KC Education Enterprise candidate survey. He also appears to be the only one of the six to have set up a Facebook campaign page.
Information about the incumbents — Hudson and Meyer — is available on the district website.
The Kansas City Kansan has published profiles of two candidates: Humphries and Kaminski.
School board members are citizens who volunteer without pay to determine the policies the superintendent uses to administer the district. The superintendent works for them, and they are responsible for tasks such as long-range planning, establishing the salaries and benefits of certified teachers, approving the annual budget and calling elections for tax levies and bond proposals.
Sample ballots for the Kansas City, Kansas school board race are available from the Wyandotte County Election Office.
Elections will take place Tuesday, April 2, on both sides of the state line in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
