Phyllis Balagna Receives One-Year Appointment to Lee’s Summit Board of Education

She graduated from Lee’s Summit High School, later taught there and now is the newest member of the Lee’s Summit Board of Education.

Last night, the board appointed Phyllis Balagna to fill the seat vacated by a member who moved out of district. Annette Braam’s resignation came too late for her seat to be included on the April 3 ballot. As an appointee, Balagna will serve one year and then must run for election if she wishes to remain on the board.

Nine candidates — including Balagna — applied for the appointment.

Balagna, who for 23 years has owned Steppin’ Out — The Studio, is an active member of the Lee’s Summit community. She is also the mother of two daughters who are district graduates.

In addition to her new appointment to the school board, Balagna is a member of the Lee’s Summit Education Foundation, Lee’s Summit CARES, the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, the New Theatre Guild board, Noon Rotary and the Superintendent’s Quality Focus Team.
