The filing deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 17, and the election will take place Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
School board members are citizens who volunteer without pay to determine the policies the superintendent uses to administer the district. The superintendent works for them, and they are responsible for tasks such as long-range planning, establishing the salaries and benefits of certified teachers, approving the annual budget and calling elections for tax levies and bond proposals.
A random drawing for the order in which names shall appear on the ballot will be conducted for candidates who file on the first day. After that, names will appear in the order in which candidates file.
Open Positions: Three six-year terms.

Any eligible person interested in serving on the school board must obtain a Declaration of Candidacy and petition form from the Board of Education secretary. On the petition form, candidates must obtain at least 100 signatures of qualified registered voters who are residents of the Independence School District.
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must be a registered voter living in the Independence School District
- Must have resided in the Missouri for one year preceding the election
- Must be at least 24 years old.
