The filing deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 17, and the election will take place Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
School board members are citizens who volunteer without pay to determine the policies the superintendent uses to administer the district. The superintendent works for them, and they are responsible for tasks such as long-range planning, establishing the salaries and benefits of certified teachers, approving the annual budget and calling elections for tax levies and bond proposals.
Names will appear on the ballot in order of filing for each position.

The school district will be on winter vacation from Wednesday, Dec. 21, through Tuesday, Jan. 3. The office will be open for candidates to file on the following dates:
December 20-21, 2011 Office Hours 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
December 22, 2011 Office Hours 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Except on the first day (December 20th) and last day (January 17th), the Board of Education Office will not be open for filing if school has been cancelled on a regular working day.
Members of the Board of Education shall be citizens of the United States and resident taxpayers of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District. They shall also have resided in the state for one year preceding their election or appointment. Members shall be at least 24 years of age. All board members should have knowledge of and an interest in the welfare and educational opportunities of students.
Board members initially elected or appointed after August 28, 1993, in addition to the other qualifications listed in this policy, are required by law to successfully complete orientation and training requirements within one year of the date of the election or appointment. The orientation and training shall consist of at least 16 hours with the cost of such training to be paid by the district.
