Olathe District Proposes Lower Property Tax

During this recession, most school districts are trying to avoid raising taxes. However, Olathe taxpayers may pay less during the 2012 fiscal year.

District Chief Financial Officer John Hutchison is proposing a 4.26 percent decrease in the mill levy to fund the new budget.

Anyone wanting to learn more about the proposed budget may attend a community workshop scheduled for later this month. In addition, a public hearing is scheduled during the board of education’s regular monthly meeting in August. After August’s public hearing, school board members will vote on the budget that same evening.

The community workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 28. Next month’s public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, August 4. Both events will take place in the district’s Education Center; 14160 Black Bob Road.

John Hutchinson, district chief financial officer, proposed the lower mill levy during July’s regular school board meeting. According to information on the district’s website, Hutchinson is proposing to decrease the rate from 72.917 to 69.813 mills.
