United Way of Greater Kansas City is participating in a national three-year-national effort to recruit a million volunteer mentors, tutors and readers to promote literacy among children.
The effort is an outgrowth of a report the United Way released last spring, Voices for the Common Good: America Speaks Out on Education. While hosting community conversations last fall, the United Way reports “the people we heard from said again and again that while the schools play an important role, communities, and individuals, have to step forward in a different way.”
